Avalon Art - Styles and Categories

We have classified the pictures by style and subject to help you find what you want more quickly. Our classification is simple - here is an explanation:

Styles

Realistic

Painted with proportions and details in everyday human scale, even if the subject is fictional. Frequently executed by artists who were being paid to make an accurate record of someone or something for posterity. A lot of portraits fall into this category. Includes the work of painters sometimes classified as belonging to the Romantic, Classic, and Realism movements.

Impressionist

Reserved here for the works of those artists most usually associated with the Impressionist movement. The artist gives an "impression" of the subject, leaving the viewers to interpret the picture as they wish. Frequently characterised by heavy brushstrokes. The apparent simplicity and charm of such pictures complement modern surroundings very well.

Other

Everything not clearly falling into the first two categories. The word "other" hardly does justice to the visual interest of the artworks you will find here, which include the works of painters from the Gothic and Baroque periods to the Modernists of the late 19th century.

Categories

Town &
Country

Landscapes, townscapes, buildings and monuments.

Maritime &

Flora &
Fauna

Plants, birds, and animal subjects. Includes Still Life scenes.

Religion &
Mythology

At the moment, just Western religious and mythical subjects.

Wild Cards

Everything else. Subjects for which we do not yet have a category.
